Powering a clean energy future: At the heart of Energy Superhub Oxford is the world’s largest hybrid battery, combining the high power capabilities of a 50MW lithium-ion battery – you can see some of the 11,000 battery modules being installed in this image - with the heavy-cycling, non-degrading characteristics of a 2MW vanadium flow battery. Battery storage is essential to decarbonise our electricity grid, creating a smarter, more flexible system powered by clean energy.
Heating that doesn’t cost the Earth: The UK government has set a target to install 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028, a massive increase on the current rate of 22,000 a year. Councillor Tom Hayes met with Energy Superhub Oxford partner, Kensa Contracting, as they worked to install 60 heat pumps at a social housing scheme in Blackbird Leys, providing residents with smart low-carbon heating solutions that are optimised for cost and comfort.
Driving change on Oxford’s streets: The electric vehicle revolution is coming to Oxford, as Oxford City Council works to electrify 25% of its 330-strong fleet by 2023. With help from Energy Superhub Oxford, over 40 new electric vehicles are already in use, from cars and vans to bin lorries and road sweepers! Next up is the UK’s largest public charging hub, due to open at Redbridge Park & Ride in late 2021, helping more of Oxford’s citizens to drive electric.
