Tools for Solidarity
Belfast
Work locally, Think Globally: Tools For Solidarity is a voluntary organisation based in Belfast. For the past 36 years we have worked to improve the lives of artisans and communities in the poorest countries in the world. We collect, refurbish and send high quality tools, sewing machines and machinery. Centres we have set up provide the artisans with training in skills development and maintenance. Our work helps to transform the lives of women, young people and people with disabilities.

Donate Today to Make Changes Tomorrow: Here is the Tools spirit in action! Our workshop is open to people from all walks of life. You can have a chat with locals that join us a few days a week. If you’re interested in learning something new about other countries, our international youth can help you with it! In our workshop our supported volunteers help us as much as we help them. We also run training sessions for refugees and asylum seekers.

Education is Our Passport for Tomorrow: We believe that education is the key of the society’s development. Thus we created an educational programme that raises awareness of global issues of sustainability and social justice. We cover topics that many pupils have never thought about such as “Inequality In The World”, “Resources Exploitation” or “Critical Thinking”. Children are the adults of the future and we seek to impart to them the knowledge and skills to make the world a better place.

Sharing sewing skills for sustainability: During our 2 hour long workshops participants have the opportunity to explore the subject of sustainable fashion and lean the basics of how to mend, alter and properly look after your garments. Together, we will: discuss why it is important to act now, explore different mending techniques to keep your garments alive, learn how to mend different types of textiles, practice basic hand stitching and look over basic clothing alterations.

Free drop in sessions to meet friends: Although we cannot meet in person in our studio at the moment, we are staying engaged with all our volunteers by running google classrooms. We have set up a number of online workshops through Eventbrite to keep us connected.

We want everybody to sew! We want to extend our online workshops as well as add more in studio sessions to get everyone sewing! We only use donated textile waste to reduce landfill. Our aim is to establish a multicultural community of crafters, designers, seamstress and tailors that come together to learn from each other, while promoting a sustainable and ethical use of skills and resources.

Effective & Sustainable Solutions: The Covid pandemic has provided the opportunity to identify effective solutions to both local social problems and the global climate change challenge. A great example of this would be our 26 mile round daily trip across Renfrewshire visiting 4 Coop, 3 Greggs and a NISA collecting their surplus food minimising unnecessary food waste by a whopping 18 tonnes thus far. A weekly community market offering surplus food, prepared and frozen food allows local issues such as food insecurity to be addressed in a dignified and sustainable way.

Community Climate Change Conversation: Ferguslie Park is an urban community which faces many challenges including food insecurity, fuel poverty, isolation & loneliness & poor mental health which means the urgent nature of the climate change challenge can often be lost in terms of priority. By making local issues relevant to the climate emergency we change local attitudes and behaviours as well as identify locally led, effective & sustainable solutions to the cumulative effects of them all. A greener more sustainable planet starts with greener more sustainable communities.

YOU ARE NATURE: Luke Jerram’s ‘of Earth and sky’ installation chose my words to be featured in a lockdown art trail. This represents the work we are doing right now with our emerging project, reconnecting people to the interdependency of humanity through talks, awakening support for our project to create a sharing and circular economy hub for our town.

Cycling to circularity: A future where every citizen can be empowered to make the changes needed to live sustainably and regeneratively. Where joy is at the heart of our communities. Place, people and planet centred living has been achieved through collective action that prioritises climate justice. It’s hard to remember air pollution, landfills, loneliness. Climate impacts are felt, but we are able to adapt and mitigate together.

Stirling Community Food: Stirling Community Food helps reduce food waste. Instead of large supermarkets putting large volumes of excess and near-sell-by-date food in the bin, the project collects the excess food and offers it to everyone in the community for free. Customers can collect many fresh bakery goods, frozen foods and flowers as well as a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Transition Stirling's Hope For The Future: We have big dreams! We are opening a Reuse Hub very soon and our hope for the future would be to have many Reuse Hubs, Tool Libraries and skill sharing sites across Stirlingshire. We would love to be a source of information for the local community and for communities around the world who would like to create a circular economy and zero waste community. CREDIT: Chris Steedman
